CPMA and Rethink the Drink has now become Bartow Against Drugs

After being selected to take part in the implementation of a statewide Alcohol Prevention Initiative in the Fall of 2011- through the Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD), we formed as the ‘Coalition to Prevent the Misuse of Alcohol’ (CPMA).

During this time, our focus has been on reducing the early onset of alcohol use among youth and reducing access to alcohol among youth. In early 2018, the Coalition rebranded as Bartow Against Drugs (BAD), and expanded our efforts to include additional substance use issues within Bartow County and to serve as a vital resource for community members looking for help.

BAD collaborates with local community members and organizations to ensure that Bartow County is aware of the local substance use issues among youth, and how we can work together to reduce these problems. We hope to serve as a resource for concerned parents, grandparents, or friends looking to find help for their loved one, as well as working to educate our future generations on the impact of their life choices.

In Rockmart City with our second Youthful 21 compliance check we came out with the same results. Ten businesses received a reward card and chose not to sell to our youthful over 21 individual without an ID. Only one business received a reminder card because the clerk opted to sell alcohol to our individual without seeing an ID. Unfortunately this business, Raceway, was the same business that sold to both youthful 21 individuals without seeing an ID. Congratulations to the other ten businesses that ID!

Our Top 3 Tips for a Safe 4th of July!

flag

The 4th of July is tomorrow and we at Rethink the Drink know how much fun it is to cook out with friends and family and enjoy the holiday. However, you can have just as much fun, if not more, without alcohol! Here are our top three tips for celebrating Independence Day safely and alcohol-free!

>> 1) Eliminate alcohol from your 4th of July party! — Alcohol and fireworks, physical activity, and driving DO. NOT. MIX. Considering most 4th of July parties involve all of those things, keep your friends and family safe by eliminating the alcohol. Not only is it extremely dangerous to mix alcohol and fireworks, but it is potentially fatal to mix alcohol with intense physical activity (in summer heat) and driving. Just don’t do it. Rethink the drink.

>> 2) Designate sober drivers for those who do drink! — Even if you choose not to serve alcohol at your own get-together, some of your guests may bring their own or may have been drinking already by the time they arrive. Make sure that EVERYONE who has consumed alcohol has a safe, sober driver to take them home. Confiscate keys if you have to. Do you part to keep intoxicated drivers off the road!

>> 3) Stay hydrated! — If your party is outdoors, it can get extremely toasty. Make sure you have plenty of alcohol-free beverages to keep yourself and your guests hydrated for a full day of fun!

We truly hope you have a fun, safe holiday tomorrow! Happy 4th of July from Rethink the Drink!
