Did you know that alcohol dehydrates you?

Yep. It’s true. Alcohol is a diuretic, which is a fancy way of saying that it causes your body to take fluids out of your blood via your kidneys and other parts of your renal system at a much faster rate than say, water or other liquids that do not have a diuretic effect.

If you drink too much alcohol at once, it can cause dehydration. If you are of legal drinking age, one way to combat this is through drinking water while you drink your alcohol. If you are underage, avoid alcohol at all costs!

Better yet, no matter your age, next time you’re craving alcohol, go for water, tea, or non-caloric soda instead! Your health (and your body) will thank you!

5 Reasons to Stay Away from Vaping

Vaping is on the rise among teens and adults alike. But is it safe? Research is suggesting that vaping, though maybe not as harmful as traditional cigarettes, still comes with a variety of health concerns attached. Today we want to share our five top reasons for avoiding vaping at all costs.

1. Vaping is just as addictive as traditional cigarettes

E-cigarettes still contain nicotine, which is a highly addictive substance. Best to stay away.

2. Vaping isn’t a surefire way to quick smoking

If quitting smoking is your goal, there are better ways to go about it. Research suggests that those who use E-cigarettes as a tool to quit smoking usually just end up smoking both e-cigarettes and traditional cigarettes.

3. E-cigarettes contain other harmful substances besides just nicotine

Nicotine isn’t the only thing to worry about in relation to e-cigarettes. There are many other harmful compounds that could compromise your health.

4. Vaping can disrupt your lung health.

If you want to be around a long time on this earth, keeping your lungs in functioning, tip top shape is a must. Avoid vaping to keep your lungs breathing well.

5. Vaping can have a negative effect on your oral health.

Just as smoking traditional tobacco can lead to oral cancers, vaping can have inflammatory and irritating effects on the mouth and gums.

It can be hard to stop a bad habit, but we know you are capable of doing it! Stay strong and avoid vaping this week. Then the next, and the next! You’ve got this.

Self care can take many forms, but we’re primarily interested in the self care that looks like avoiding alcohol and other harmful drugs like marijuana, tobacco, and the abuse of opioids. It may not seem like self care to say no to an alcoholic beverage at a friend’s house, but in the long run, you are making great strides in your overall health. Every time you prioritize health over momentary pleasure, you’re flexing and building up that “muscle” that allows you to have greater willpower in the future. Self care is important. So is keeping your body free of harmful substances. Take charge of your health today and just say “NO”!
