A new article on CBS news discusses genetics and peers and the impact they have on teen drinking. It’s a fascinating article and I encourage all teens and parents who visit the blog to take a look. Bottom line, peers may have more of an impact on alcohol behaviors rather than genetics or other factors.

Alcohol dulls your senses and your inhibitions. It is also often involved in sexual assault cases. The following article discusses alcohol’s usual involvement in rape cases.

>> Alcohol is by Far the Most Dangerous ‘Date Rape Drug’ // The Guardian

Remember that alcohol is a powerful drug and if you’re normally on the lookout for date rape drugs and such, remember that alcohol is sufficient to add danger to a situation. Rethink the drink and encourage your friends to avoid alcohol when at parties — especially if you’re underage, but even if you’re of legal drinking age.

Whatever your own personal thoughts toward religion or spirituality might be, this article is worth noting.

“…young people who connect to a ‘higher power’ may feel a greater sense of purpose and are less likely to be bothered by feelings of not fitting in.” (This helps religious / spiritual youth avoid alcohol and other harmful activities).

Here is the source article. We encourage you to consider your own religious / spiritual thoughts (or lack their of) and find a purpose and sense of self-worth for your life. You are special. You are worthy of attention, love, and respect. If you don’t get it from your friends or family, give it to yourselfRethink the drink and other dangerous activities. You’re worth more than that!

Respect yourself enough to rethink the drink at the next gathering you have with your friends. Your body is something you’ll have to live in for the rest of your life. Have you ever really thought about how you care for it?

Has anyone ever told you that it’s 100% OKAY not to drink alcohol? Though it may seem like there is pressure on you from friends and others to drink alcohol, it is your choice what you decide to put into your body. If you are uncomfortable about drinking alcohol or engaging in other illegal or risky behaviors as a teen, DON’T DO IT. It’s okay. You may feel “uncool” or lame for a little while, but after you see how wise choices make you feel confident in your own decisions and in the respect you have for your body, it won’t sting so much. Besides, it’s important to surround yourself with friends who support wise and healthy choices. Own your decisions to respect yourself and to make wise choices! Rethink the drink! You have our support and probably more social support than you think!
